Author Spotlight on Monique Durand Currie

Welcome to our Author Spotlight, where we shine a light on writers, authors, and literary wonders worldwide.

Today our spotlight is shining on Monique Durand Currie, author of Under the Apple Tree, a picture book that aims to teach mindfulness, empathy and positivity to readers between the ages of 2 and 8.

1. First, tell us a little about your book/project?

Under the Apple Tree is a rhyming picture book for ages 2-8 that takes you on an adventure in mindfulness. Using your 5 senses as your guide, discover what wondrous things happen Under the Apple Tree when you take the time to look deeper. Make sure to look for the frog on every page 🐸

2. What kind of research did you do and how long do you spend researching before beginning a book?

I am an avid hiker and outdoor enthusiast and I always take the time to “stop and smell the roses” whenever possible to reconnect with nature and my inner self. There is no better research than this when writing a book that encourages mindfulness in nature.

3. If you could tell your younger writing self one thing, what would it be?

Never give up on your dreams! They may take a little longer than expected to happen, but everything happens in its own time and at the RIGHT time. My goal of being a published author by age 30 didn’t happen until 20 years after … but it was made even more special because my daughter illustrated the book for me… something that couldn’t have happened 20 yrs earlier!

4. Can you tell us a bit about your writing space? Is there something you need to have when writing a book?

My writing space is very unconventional. I usually wake up at 3 am with amazing book ideas running through my head. I always keep a notebook and pen handy to write the ideas down right away before they disappear into the night. I even translated all the rhymes from Under the Apple Tree into French this way … that was pretty amazing!

5. If you could be a character from any book for 24 hours, who would you be?

I love all things mystical and magical so I would definitely want to be a character from Harry Potter! I would love to attend Hogwarts school for a 24 hr period to hang out with Luna and Nevil and try out my new spells with my awesome new wand! I’d love to attend potions class, play on the Quidditch team and of course drink some butter beer under my invisibility cloak in the restricted area of the library!
