Author Spotlight on Jessica Brown

Author Spotlight on Jessica Brown

Welcome to our Author Spotlight, where we shine a light on writers, authors, and literary wonders worldwide.

Today our spotlight is shining on Jessica Brown, romance author of multiple series that can be found on Kindle Vella.

1. First, tell us a little about your book/project?

I have several projects I'm working on currently. One is the Something Series, which will end up being a five-book series initially available through Kindle Vella. The first in the series is Something Sweet for Christmas, a slow burn, super sweet, enemies-to-lovers holiday romance. Something Sweet is complete and available for binge reading. The next in the series is Something Sultry for Valentine's, a steamy, enemies-to-lovers, bully-from-the-past romance. The first several episodes (or chapters) of Something Sultry are available on Vella currently, with completion estimated mid-April. The third book will begin being released around the end of May, the fourth closer to fall, and the fifth right before the end of the year.

Another project that I'm working on is a small-town, romantic suspense series called the North Creek Novels. The first, Staying Lost, is about a woman named Kate who is prepared to start a new life in North Creek, a small town in the Pacific Northwest, far from the bustle of New York City and farther from her abusive husband, Lucas. With little money to her name, Kate accepts a job as a waitress, working for Grant Wilkes and his sister Ana. Grant is everything Lucas wasn't. Patient. Kind. Protective. As Kate lets her guard down and the horrors of her past are slowly revealed, trouble seems to lurk close by making Kate consider running a second time. The first episodes (or chapters) of Staying Lost are currently available on Vella, with completion estimated in May. The entire series will first be released on Vella, though it will later be released wide.

The third project is co-authoring a small-town romance series with a writer friend, May Lark, . This series takes place in a fictional oceanside town in Maine called Port Seaver and follows the lives of its residents. There are four planned novels for the series, all with initial release on Vella and eventually going wide.

A final project I have in the works is an Irish mafia romance. The first novel will tentatively be released at the end of 2022 or beginning of 2023 through KU and KDP.

2. What kind of research did you do and how long do you spend researching before beginning a book?

I tend to research as I go, though I will do basic research on elements before starting. Some series require far less research than others. The Something Series hasn't had a ton of research needed, with the exception of bits here and there. For example, I had to do a little research on how OnlyFans works, how much people can make off their content, etc. since Beau Valentine (from Something Sultry) has an account on a similar, fictional platform. Other series I'm working on required a bit more research, particularly the mafia romance in terms of weapons, underground events, and the various ways someone could be tortured.

3. If you could tell your younger writing self one thing, what would it be?

Start sooner and work steadily.

4. Can you tell us a bit about your writing space? Is there something you need to have when writing a book?

My writing space is wherever I find a seat, which is usually my couch or kitchen table. I have a six-month-old who keeps me moving around the home, so my space adapts as needed. That said, I always need a cup of hot tea, usually peach rooibos, to keep me going. When my husband takes over baby duty so I can write, I also like to have classical music playing in my earbuds.

5. If you could be a character from any book for 24 hours, who would you be?

I can only choose one? Oh, boy. I think I would have to choose Dr. Evelyn Talbot from Brenda Novak's The Evelyn Talbot Chronicles Series. She has a fascinating job working as a psychiatrist at a maximum security facility in Alaska, studying the minds of psychopaths to better understand an attack on her during her youth. It's a wonderful series.
