Welcome to our Author Spotlight, where we shine a light on writers, authors, and literary wonders worldwide.
Today our spotlight is shining on Ella English, author and illustrator of Katy on Broadway, the first book in the Kitty in the City series which is set to be released on May 25th.
1. First, tell us a little about your book/project?
KATY ON BROADWAY is the first in the Kitty in the City series, written and illustrated by Ella English and will be released on 25 May 2022
Katy loves to sing and practices every day. Gerry the squirrel says she can’t sing, and Lilian says New York is too dangerous for such a small kitty. But now she’s ready to try! She escapes her yard and makes it to the city. But it IS a big scary place! Now she’s all alone and lost. How will she find her way? Can she really become a superstar?
This chapter book about a singing cat for ages 5-7 Grades 1-2 can be purchased in hardback, paperback and eBook here and on Amazon here.
2. What kind of research did you do and how long do you spend researching before beginning a book?
I sketch out ideas for a children's book character and then when I am happy with that the character inspires me to come up with a plot.
My latest book is KATY ON BROADWAY, the first in the Kitty in the City series. It’s about a theatrical cat living in New York City who has big dreams of being a star and her street smart sidekick Weasel who keeps her from being too much of a drama queen.
The inspiration for the book came from my very vocal and theatrical cat Mouse, a black tuxedo cat who I’ve had for two years now, who loves to catch leaves instead of mice. She’s always singing and prancing about and wanting lots of attention.
3. If you could tell your younger writing self one thing, what would it be?
You are going to be a writer, so don't doubt yourself girlfriend!
I was born in the UK and was always reading as a child. I would read while I was brushing my teeth and while I walked to school. And when I wasn’t reading I was writing. My favorite author was Judy Blume and I wrote a book inspired by her where I was the eldest of six children, living in America. I was sort of like their mom and they were always doing mischievous things like squirting toothpaste all over the ceiling. It is funny that I wrote that book while I was a child in the UK as I now live in the US…it’s almost like I could predict the future!
4. Can you tell us a bit about your writing space? Is there something you need to have when writing a book?
I usually have my two cat companions draped over my keyboard. Their canine energy inspires me.
5. If you could be a character from any book for 24 hours, who would you be?
I would love to be Pippi Longstocking. She fascinated me as a child! She lives on her own with her monkey Mr. Nilsson and her best friend, a horse. She's fun and fearless and I always wanted to have adventures like her.
